A Slice of Summer
An Easy Way to Warm Up in Randolph
A great way to escape the winter, without springing for a trip
to Florida or the Caribbean, is a visit to the VTC pool at the SHAPE facility.
It’s a tiny, if temporary, oasis of summer without leaving Vermont!
How so? First of all, the water is a consistent 84 degrees. You don’t have to brace yourself to jump in. Even better, air temperature in the facility is balmy as well, so even if you just want to chill poolside, the warmth is really enjoyable.
On a sunny day, particularly in the mornings, the sun reflects in ripples off the water, pouring in through the south-facing windows to really maximize the atmosphere. For those in the pool, the sun creates tropical highlights in the bubbles when swimming underwater that can easily trick your mind to leave Vermont behind – but it’s also somehow satisfying to be enjoying the warmth while gazing at the snow piled up outside.
As far as logistics, the pool is set up in halves, with three lanes for lap swimming and a large open space for other water activities. VTC has a closet full of toys and equipment for guests to utilize, everything from a basketball hoop and flotation noodles to kickboards and other paraphernalia.
Avoid M,W,F from 10-11 as there is a water aerobics class at that time, and Saturday mornings are usually reserved for swim lessons. But, if you time it right, you and your friends can pretty much have the place to yourselves.
There are more details on the VTC website, including various membership options. http://athletics.vtc.edu/shape/info Only one drawback – no drinks allowed. Just remember that it’s a lot closer than Florida.
