Hurricane Girls Hoops lose close one to Fair Haven
Good defensive effort vs #1 team in Division II
By John Seaver
Hartford went the distance with perennial power house Fair Haven but in the end came up just short losing to the top ranked Slaters 37-34 in an exciting game at Hanley gymnasium. The Hurricanes led for most of the first half behind the sharp shooting of Michaela Ricker who led the Canes with 13 points but the Slaters ended the second quarter on a 9-2 run to tie the game at 18.
Fair Haven, led by Kaleigh Brown's 15 points, opened up a nine point lead early in the 4th quarter but the Canes scratched back into it with a Morgan White bucket, a Ricker layin off a steal and when Cory Lieberman drained a three pointer from the top of the key the Canes had cut the Slater lead to just 2, 34-32, with under two minutes to play.
The Canes could not make it all the way back however as they could not take advantage of missed free throws and turnovers by the Slaters with a few costly turnovers of their own in the final minute. Morgan White's basket at the buzzer ended the scoring and the Slaters held on for the three point win. A key stat that had a big impact on the game was the Slaters gathering 12 offensive rebounds on the night giving them a lot of second and third looks.
Coach Troy Guerin was pleased with his teams effort. "It was a good effort, (we) need to continue to attack the rim and look inside out." Added coach Guerin, "Defensively we just need to learn to expect the unexpected, be ready at all times to be the first to any 50/50 balls. Great group of ladies, we'll be back at it tomorrow."
Fair Haven improves to 12-2 on the season and sits solidly in the top spot in DII. The Canes fall to 5-7 and will look to get back on the winning track Thursday night in Windsor. The Slaters host Otter Valley Thursday night.
In addition to Brown's game high 15 points, Ryleigh Coloutti & Adriana Dalto chipped in 7 points each for the Slaters. The Canes were led by Michaela Ricker's 13 points. Corey Lieberman added 9 points & 7 rebounds & Morgan White 7 points for the Canes.
Category 5 Hurricane Player of the Game: Michaela Ricker. She helped the Canes get out to early lead with 8 first half points and added a layup late during the 4th quarter comeback.
