A Touchy-Feely Type of Sunday

Everyone makes sacrifices this time of year. Today, an array of mammals, reptiles, vertebrates, and insects did their part to bring a little light and shed a little joy on the Upper Valley.

At River Road Veterinary Clinic along the Connecticut River, these various animals allowed themselves to be pet, rubbed, knocked upon, stared at, laughed at, photographed, and generally admired by hordes of local residents, young and less young.

The special petting zoo was a featured part of day 17 of the 19 Days of Norwich and Beyond. Visitors could make a donation that would benefit the Haven. The fauna was not the only living thing making a sacrifice on this Sunday afternoon. One of the employees, who was helping to shepherd the kids through the piglets, goats, bunnies, chickens, horses, calves, macaws, tortoises, black milk snakes, and giant Madagascar hissing cockroaches, said it had been busy for the entire 3 hours. With a broad smile, she conceded that she and her colleagues were tired.

But the shrieks of delight from children and the vast generosity of the community at large were clearly enough to make her sacrifice worthwhile.

Tomorrow, we celebrate the appropriateness of the word "penultimate."
