Opera North Sings, The Circus Swings at Blow-Me-Down Farm

It is thoughts of the circus part of Opera North’s recent news (“aerialists and arias”) that is going to get me through the winter.

Opera North announced its Summerfest 2018, which will include staging two popular operas, Tales of Hoffman and Barber of Seville, at the Lebanon Opera House. In recent years, a third event—an American musical—had been added to the schedule. This summer, however, in place of the musical, Opera North will be presenting Singers and Swingers, a show that includes opera singers and circus performers.

Last summer’s concert at the Blow-Me-Down Farm in Cornish NH

Singers and Swingers (and kudos to whomever came up with the title, but my bet is on Director Evans Haile) will take place at the historic Blow-Me-Down Farm in Cornish NH. Last summer, the farm was the site of an Opera North outdoor concert, complete with fundraising auction, tours of the facility, and lobster rolls catered by Boisvert’s. Opera North has received a $150,000 grant (read about it here) to work with Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site to renovate the property’s Charles Beaman home as a beginning of a Park for the Arts.

As popular and well-attended as the Blow-Me-Down concert turned out to be, Opera North has not settled for repeating itself. What more unlikely—and refreshing—combination could there be than opera and the circus?

I am still unsure what this will look like. Isn’t imagining it, on a beautiful summer afternoon (or evening) near the river with that magnificent view of Mount Ascutney, at least half the fun?
