Boxes, Ribbons and Bows: Holiday Waste Reduction Tips

Submitted a year ago

At this festive time of year, we generate a whole lot of trash.  Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, Americans throw away 25% more trash than any other time of the year. Much of the waste that is generated can easily be recycled with a little bit of planning. Wrapping paper can be recycled; however, there are a few things to remember.

Foil wrapping paper is NOT recyclable at the Lebanon Recycling Center.

Tips:

  1. Choose to wrap gifts in newspaper.
  2. Give a gift in a reusable bag.
  3. Give a gift in a decorated paper bag.

Ribbons and Bows are also NOT recyclable. Americans use nearly 40,000 miles of ribbon on gifts. Please remove them when recycling wrapping paper.

Tips:

  1. Simply don’t use ribbons and/or bows.
  2. Attach candy canes or other items to a gift to “pretty it up”.
  3. Make bows from paper, magazines, or wrapping paper that can be recycled.

Holiday Cards can be recycled with mixed paper.  Each year, we share more than 2 billion cards with our friends, family and neighbors.

Tips:

  1. Send an e-card.
  2. Call a friend instead of sending a card..
