So What is CBD Anyway?

If you’ve been paying attention to the news at all recently, you might already be aware that the hemp industry in Vermont is booming. In 2013 a bill was passed that allowed for the cultivation and production of hemp in Vermont, and since that time the number of growers, producers, and makers in the state has been growing exponentially.

One of the major products derived from hemp is cannabidiol, or CBD for short, and it’s been popping up in various forms all around the state recently. But what is it?

In simple terms, it’s a non psychoactive derivative of the cannabis plant. So it’s not a drug, and it won’t get you high, but it does have many potential uses in the realm of wellness and health. It can be used for a range of anxiety and mental health issues as well as for managing chronic pain, inflammation and issues with sensitive skin. We’ve been carrying a small amount in our shop and the feedback from our customers has been overwhelmingly positive.

There are countless companies producing and selling CBD, and despite the boom in our state’s industry, a lot of what you might find on the shelves locally is derived from compounds that are created out of state.

Right now all of our CBD based products come from Z Botanicals, an herbalist located in Vershire, VT. While do they get their compound from out of state, the wellness remedies that they make with it are then infused with locally sourced botanicals like St. John’s wort, lavender and calendula for a truly unique and local range of solutions. (Ropana is another local company using CBD for health and wellness solutions, and we will soon be trying some of their products in the shop as well!)

As a small operation ourselves where there’s not much separation between conception and execution, we love getting behind other local producers operating on a similar scale.

CBD comes in many forms, from pills to food items, to salves and creams and we’ve found the most success stocking both tinctures and moisturizing salves in our shop. CBD (and Vermont’s hemp industry in general!) is an ever evolving playing field and new uses and forms of CBD are emerging. We’d love to hear feedback regarding the products that we carry in our downtown shop and are open to suggestions for new items as well!
