Two local residents arrested for "illicit substances"

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION - What began as a routine traffic stop Tuesday afternoon quickly escalated into a search on North Main Street and ended with the arrests of two of the four people who had been traveling together in a small black Saturn.

    "Officer (Thomas) Howell initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle and we ended up doing a consent search that turned up some illicit substances and resulted in the arrests of two persons," Hartford Police Sgt. Jason Pedro explained at the scene.

    The names of the man and the woman who were arrested were not immediately released.

Several Vermont State Police troopers rolled into the downtown to assist the Hartford officers

Troopers arrested a female passenger who had been in the vehicle

Police found a hunting rifle in the trunk of the vehicle

Other passengers waited while the search was underway

A passenger in hunting garb was questioned about evidence that was seized from the car but he was not arrested
