Hanover Girls' Soccer Beats John Stark 2-0
Marauders Knock Off Defending Champs; Break Unbeaten Streak
The Hanover High School girls’ soccer team earned their biggest win of the season on Friday, beating undefeated John Stark 2-0 at Merriman-Branch Field. Goals by Bryn Kable and Mindy Wu gave propelled the Marauders to the victory, snapping a seven-game unbeaten streak for the defending state champions. Hanover had tied the Generals earlier in the season, but the win over their archrivals was the first in two years. John Stark had beaten Hanover 1-0 twice last year en route to the NHIAA Division II title.
Kable, a junior midfielder, pounced on a rebound in the John Stark goalmouth in the first half, notching her first goal of the season. Senior striker Carly Craft received an assist on the play. The Marauders, who had a significant edge in play, notched their crucial insurance goal at 16:20 of the second half when defender Mindy Wu knocked in a Pepper Johnson corner kick.
Hanover’s defense was solid throughout the match. Wu and Sophie Miles were well-positioned and aggressive in front of sophomore goalkeeper Bella Bardales, who collected her third shutout of the season. The stingy Marauders have allowed only four goals in seven matches, and raised their record to 5-1-1.
Hanover got superb midfield play from Senior Captain Kate Wagner, who patrolled the field from penalty area to penalty area, and got great help from teammates Charlotte Johnson, Casey McGuire and Sage McGinley-Smith (all ninth graders), and Joseph, a varsity veteran as a sophomore.
“This was a big match for us,” commented ninth-year Hanover mentor Doug Kennedy. “We were really pointing toward this game. I think the team really stepped up.” The Marauders return to action on Tuesday, making the short jaunt to Lebanon for a return match with the Raiders. Hanover edged Lebanon 2-1 earlier this season, and expect another close match.
