The new Director of the Upper Valley Community
Band will lead the Band’s artistic programming, rehearsals, and concerts. The
Director will also contribute to the development of the Band’s mission, taking
initiative in the recruitment of new band members, strengthening audience
engagement, and providing an enthusiastic public face for the Band.
The Director is responsible for conducting all
rehearsals and performances of the Band. They will select repertoire to be
rehearsed and performed, taking into account the history and traditions of the
Band along with suggestions from the Board of Directors, the Associate
Director, and Band members. The Director has control over artistic decisions,
and has the final authority of program selection for performances.
The Director will contribute to the band’s
efforts to recruit new members, and will help manage the onboarding process,
instrument and seating assignment, and evaluation of band members. We are
seeking someone with creative ideas or strong experience recruiting volunteers.
The Director is responsible for working with
the UVCB’s Music Librarian on music orders and preparation of parts in advance
of the first rehearsal. They will also prepare program notes for the Band’s
announcers and concert programs.
The Director is a non-voting member of the
Board of Directors and is expected to attend board meetings, providing input
into the direction and administration of the Band from an artistic standpoint.
In addition, they are expected to participate in periodic social functions and
take an active role in the organization.
The position includes an annual stipend.
Bachelor’s Degree in music
performance or music education, with three years experience conducting large
ensembles, preferably working with adults.
Knowledge and understanding of
concert band literature with expertise in concert band programming.
Demonstrated leadership qualities
with excellent conducting, teaching and verbal skills.
Ability to work with adult
musicians of all skills, backgrounds, and commitment levels.
Passionate about conducting and
leading a dedicated ensemble.

THE UPPER VALLEY COMMUNITY BAND
The Upper Valley Community Band is an amateur
concert band made up of more than seventy volunteer musicians from the Upper
Valley region of Vermont and New Hampshire, with roots dating back to the
1860s. The Band is open to anyone in the community willing and able to play
regardless of ability or experience. Performance programs consist of a wide
variety of concert band repertoire with a focus on pops, marches, and
standards. UVCB is incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
From early September through June, the band
rehearses Monday evenings at Hanover High School, Hanover, NH to prepare for
two formal concerts at Lebanon Opera House in January and May/June. The summer
schedule is full of parades and outdoor concerts throughout the Upper Valley.
