Rt. 5 North in Norwich Is Closed

Rt. 5 in Norwich washed out Saturday night.

"This is worse than Irene," said a VTrans equipment operator pausing to assess the damage to Rt. 5 in Norwich.  Saturday night's storms washed out the northbound lane of Rt. 5 about a half mile from the Green. Crews were working Sunday morning to divert the water that was still running across the highway. A culvert on nearby Four Wheel Drive failed sending water straight down the hill. That caused the highway to washout. Even with 4 wheel drive, Four Wheel Drive was impassable and will need to be rebuilt.

Norford Lake Road and Tigertown Road also had washouts said a town official. A listserve reader wrote  "between Tucker Hill Road and West Norwich, there is a stretch of Beaver Meadow Road where there are sections (about half a lane) which have collapsed on both sides of the road.  Other sections have been  undercut and are not supported below the pavement.  Exercise caution.  Dispatch was alerted.

Four Wheel Drive will have to be rebuilt.
