Claremont Man Arrested in Arson Case
New Hampshire State Fire Marshal J. William Degnan, Claremont Police Chief Mark Chase, and Claremont Fire Chief Richard Bergeron announced that an arrest has been made in connection with a fire that occurred on June 22 involving a vehicle at a residence.
As a result of the joint investigation, Steven Meyette, 45, of Claremont, NH, was arrested on June 22, on one felony level charge of Arson; it is anticipated that additional charges will be forthcoming, said the authorities. He is currently being held at the Sullivan County House of Corrections in lieu of $25,000 cash-only bail.
The investigation remains ongoing by members of the NH State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Claremont Police Department.
Degnan reminded citizens that arson is not a victimless crime, and that “any intentionally set fire puts in motion a series of events that significantly jeopardizes both the public and our First Responders safety. Nationwide, intentional set fires cause over 400 deaths, 1,300 injuries, and $1.3 billion dollars in direct property damage annually,” he said.
