New Norwich Town Manager Herb Durfee tees up with Justin Timberlake.

How Norwich's New Town Manager Played Golf With Justin Timberlake

Submitted a year ago

Herb Durfee became the new town manager of Norwich in May.

He stepped into the middle of a number of Norwich projects—like the construction of a new public safety building and an update to selectboard policies and ordinances.

Durfee, 54, was the town manager in Fair Haven for four years before coming to Norwich. He said both towns have a lot of community pride.

“The big difference coming here is that Norwich is an extremely engaged community,” he said.

Durfee lives in Grand Isle with his wife and two children. His 17-year-old son will be off to the University of Wisconsin Madison in the fall to study chemical or biomedical engineering. His 14-year-old daughter will be attending Brewster Academy in the fall.

We asked Durfee some questions, including how he happened to tee up with Justin Timberlake for a round of golf in the mountains of New Hampshire one day.

So, how were you paired with one of the most famous pop stars on the golf course?

His wife Jessica Biel was a bridesmaid in one of my best friend’s weddings last year. His wife is best friends with Jessica from college days. I, somehow, was paired up with Justin when all the men played golf at the Mt. Washington Resort while the women helped the bride get ready for the wedding.

Wow! Did he sing or dance or do anything quirky?

He danced with the mother of the groom…very late eighties/early 90’s.

 How’s JT’s golf game?

He’s, actually, a really good golfer. Has a handicap and all. He’s also just as fun in person as he is with Jimmy Fallon.

I'm jealous!

He's a pretty cool guy; very down to earth.

Which three people, living or dead, would you like to eat dinner with?

Stan Lee (Marvel Comics), Robin Williams, and, probably, the British soldier that fired the, “shot heard round the world.”

If money were not a consideration, how would you spend your days?

Being with my family on a boat or at the beach.

What did you want to be growing up?

Antique shop owner.

If you were suddenly the winner of a $10 million lottery ticket, what’s the first thing you’d buy?

Probably one of Dan & Whit’s burgers.

What is the best meal you’ve ever had?

My mom’s grilled cheese sandwiches with spicy mustard.

What book did you last read?

The Bone Labyrinth by James Rollins.

What are three things still left on your bucket list?

Seeing my kids’ college diplomas, playing golf with Justin Timberlake (whoops, already did that!), completing my wife’s “honey do” list, and “successful” retirement.
