I have been a part of the Culinary Arts program at the Hartford Area Career and Technology Center (HACTC) for the past two years where I’ve had the opportunity to work in our state-of-the-art kitchen, be open for live service in our restaurant, the Getaway, and learn the ins and outs of safety and sanitation. The Culinary Arts program at the HACTC also gives students the opportunity to be a part of the Hospitality Club. I have been part of this club since Junior year when I was appointed Vice President, and this year I got the privilege of being the club President. The responsibility of being an officer is to organize all of the meetings that take place, come up with new ways to raise money for our club, and talk about ways in which we can give back to the community. Throughout my past two years, the Hospitality Club has taught me how become a better public speaker, along with empathy, the ability to understand and share the feelings of others.
The club’s main focuses are to give back to the community, organize fundraisers to raise money for the restaurant, plus plan a class trip at the end of the year. The first fundraiser we did was a cookie dough fundraiser in which we sell four different cookie doughs in two pound portions per container. We ended up selling 680 pounds of cookie dough my junior year, which happened to be the most we’ve ever sold in one year. In addition, we also held a Pie Fundraiser where we sold pies around Thanksgiving time, and a Fill Your Freezer Fundraiser during which we sold lasagnas and apple crisps.
Recent community service projects included giving back to The Haven whenever we’re free. We often walked down cooked goods or food so they can enjoy a nice meal or even just to brighten their day a little bit.
