Hartford Shuts out Rice
Canes advance to Quarter Finals with 4-0 win
By John Seaver
It took a few innings for the Hurricane offense to bust through against Rice starting pitcher Griffin McDermott scoring all 4 of their runs in a big 4th inning as the #4 seed Hurricanes defeated #13 seed Rice Memorial 4-0 in front of a big crowd at Maxfield Thursday night. The Hurricanes left the bases loaded in the first and stranded 2 runners in both the second and third innings before the break out 4th.
Riley Packard got the rally started with a sharp single to left and Nick Wright reached on a sac bunt when catcher Chris Foley's throw pulled Matt Guyette off first. A Tyler Hamilton high pop was misplayed into a single loading the bases for the Canes. A sharp single up the middle by Dylan Spencer gave the Canes a 1-0 lead. Hunter Perkins doubled to deep right center to score two more and Jordy Allard followed with a double over the left fielders head scoring Perkins for a 4-0 lead.
Hunter Perkins 2 RBI Double
Jordy Allard RBI Double
The win advances the Hurricanes to the Division 1 quarterfinals where they will meet MVL rival Brattleboro. The #12 seed Colonels beat #5 Mount Mansfield behind a no hitter by junior ace Lief Bigelow. The Colonels beat the Hurricanes in both meetings during the regular season so there is plenty of incentive for a Hartford squad that lost just 3 games all season.
Tyler Hamilton, Dylan Spencer & Jordy Allard had 2 hits each. Hunter Perkins, Riley Packard & Nick Wright added 1 hit each. Jake Trombley had 2 hits for Rice.
Category 5 Hurricane Player of the Game: Jordy Allard - the senior pitcher threw a complete game 4 hitter with 17 strikeouts and added an RBI double.
Allard's pitching line for the season is now 7-0, 40.1 IP, 1R, 9H, 78K's.
Game Note: Allard was honored after the game for being named the Vermont State High School Gatorade Baseball Player of the Year.
