Hypnosis for Smoking Cessation
Quitting a smoking habit can be intensely challenging for some people. Many attempt to quit and then fall back into the habit in stressful or frustrating situations. Because those who attempt to quit are often so determined to fight the addiction, they are often willing to try new methods. If you have tried other methods of quitting and failed, your doctor may suggest you use hypnosis to quit smoking.
I see my clients who are ready to quit smoking for a series of three sessions. Most will either stop smoking entirely, or cut back dramatically a day after the first session. The subsequent sessions are designed to reinforce and lock in those changes in habit, to introduce self-hypnosis, and to manage stress in new and healthy ways.
I have heard from many clients that they, or a family member or friend, attended a ‘stop smoking with hypnosis’ event in a large group, and were not successful. Although relatively inexpensive and heavily advertised, these events are flawed for a number of reasons. First off, they follow a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach, which does nothing to address personal barriers, stress relief, or associated unwanted weight gain. Secondly, hypnosis is a process of relaxation and intense focus - a state that most people have difficulty attaining sitting next to a stranger in a crowded room.
I design each hypnosis session based on my client’s personal goals and barriers to success. We start each session with a discussion about goals and progress, and we build on those accomplishments.
Whether you have smoked for just a short time, or for your entire adult life, hypnosis can help you rapidly remove the habit and craving. By integrating stress reduction and self-hypnosis, our clients are often able to stop smoking without unwanted weight gain.
