Playing in Post Mills
Balloons, Books and Ice Cream!
For those of us who live close by, Post Mills is welcome place to enjoy recreational activities that are easy on the family budget. This past weekend, I attended an event at the Post Mill’s airport, home to many enthusiastic aviators who fly small planes, gliders, and on a regular basis, hot air balloons. This Dinner Under the Balloons was a fundraiser for a local preschool, and according to many there, the largest gathering of experimental aircraft in the country. Packed with families who picnicked as we waited for the balloons to launch, this free event was a big hit. If you are interested in eclectic museum collections, this is your place. It even has a dinosaur on the premises, that has been mentioned in Roadside America.
Lake Fairlee is a wonderful place to paddle, and over the years I have regularly seen Osprey, and Great Blue Heron on the water. There is a public boat launch on Route 244 and I highly recommend boating in the early morning or late evening, when the lake is less populated.
The Town of Thetford maintains a public beach further down the road, called Treasure Island. This public park has picnic tables, a dock to swim to, and a playground too. It is a popular spot on hot days but a very fun and affordable place to visit with your family.
Before you hit the beach, I recommend a stop into the Peabody Library. It is the oldest library building in Vermont, and a real treasure. If you can’t make it during library hours, there is a permanent rack of beach reads available for sale (by donation) on the front porch.
Forgot your sunscreen? Need more cold drinks? Condiments for your hamburgers? Or perhaps you
have heard of the famous King Kone? Baker’s
General Store can help with all this and so much more. The small ice cream cones are quite large, though some prefer the challenge of a regular cone.
Finally, consider stopping at one of my favorite farm stands in the Upper Valley. Crossroad Farm has amazing vegetables, flowers, garden starts and once fully operational, local meats and cheeses.
This little spot in the Upper Valley has so much to offer. I highly recommend a day in Post Mills be added to your summer must-do list. Perhaps you will see a balloon or even go up in one yourself.
