The Newport Police Department has arrested Ryan Gobin, age 18, of Newport, NH. The arrest comes after the Newport Police Department Emergency Communications Center received several calls during the night of May 2nd and the early morning hours of May 3rd reporting that vehicles had been entered and items removed. Initially, all of the calling parties were from the Maple, Laurel, South Streets and Woodland Ave areas.
At approximately 2:30 a.m., an alert citizen called and reported a suspicious subject near the golf course on Unity Road. Officers responded and located Gobin who allegedly had in his possession stolen items that had been reportedly taken from other unsecured vehicles in the area that evening. The ongoing investigation has revealed that several vehicles were either entered or attempted to be entered in the greater downtown area. Several items have been recovered and other items have been located stashed on other properties. The Newport Police Department asks that anyone who has located items on their property that do not belong to them to please notify the department of their findings.
Anyone who believes that they are a victim and has not yet reported their loss to the Newport Police Department is urged to do so. At this time Gobin has been charged with Theft and Possession of Stolen Property, both Misdemeanors.
As the investigation continues, additional charges or enhanced felony level charges are expected, said Newport Police Chief James Burroughs.
Gobin was released on $3,000 personal recognizance bail to appear at the Newport’s 5th Circuit Court on July 25.
