On Monday Dr. Sandra Wong, chair of Dartmouth-Hitchcock's surgery department, invited the hospital's women surgeons to an operating room to photograph the DHMC version of "The New Yorker Operating Room Cover Challenge." Memeing the magazine's April 3 cover is part of a national effort highlighting the contributions of women surgeons. The trending hashtags are #NYerORCoverChallenge and #ILookLikeaSurgeon.
"Taking photos acknowledging our women surgeons as part of "The New Yorker OR Cover Challenge" was great fun," said Dr. Wong. "Part of the reason we joined the challenge was to highlight a significant issue in medicine: Nationally, less than 20 percent of surgeons are women, and less than one percent of leadership roles in surgery are held by women. Hopefully the awareness raised by 'The New Yorker OR Cover Challenge' will open the pipeline to greater opportunities for women in surgery and in medicine as a whole.”
Some DHMC factoids: Dartmouth-Hitchcock has 19 women surgeons across the system. Seventeen work at the medical center in Lebanon. There are 21 trainees in the surgical residency program. Dr. Wong is one of only 15 women serving as the chair of surgery at an academic medical center in the United States.
