Uh-Oh! Upper Valley in Decline?
Population drops as deaths outnumber births
The Claremont/Lebanon Micropolitan Area — that's census talk for the Upper Valley, if you define it broadly — has about 2,100 fewer people living here today than it did in 2010, according to census figures released yesterday. The Census Bureau pegs the current population at 216,307.
Two factors contributed to the decline. More people died (12,774) than were born (12,005). In addition, about 2,700 moved away since the last census.
The total population decline would have been greater if 1,700 people from overseas had not moved here during the same period.
