We have all learned our behaviors at an earlier time in our lives. When we encountered a situation that was significant to us, our subconscious minds stored that information and used it to create a habit, so that the next time we encountered a similar situation, we were equipped with an automatic response. This is a wonderful process, except that those reactions are not always the healthiest or most productive.
Hypnosis is a process of reprogramming those responses to be in line with our current goals and desires. We do this by inducing a hypnotic state, which is a state of intense focus and relaxation. The purpose of this is to bypass the conscious mind to speak directly to the subconscious mind, which is in charge of the imagination, fears, habits, and reactions.
During hypnosis, you are awake and alert the entire time. In my practice, it is an interactive process, and you are actively participating throughout the session. You cannot be made t do anything that you wouldn't normally do, and you are in control of yourself the entire time.
For my weight loss clients, I begin the first session with a discussion about what your goals are, in terms of what you feel like now, and what you would rather feel like. During hypnosis, we work on ego-strengthening and teaching you that you can make suggestions to yourself and have your body believe you. This lays a foundation for changing eating habits and attitudes toward food. In subsequent sessions we continue to reinforce the changes we've already made, and work on increasing motivation to exercise.
Though it is impossible to predict how many sessions will be needed to achieve change, my clients usually notice changes in their behaviors after the first session. I recommend a minimum of three sessions for weight loss.
