Work By Day, Play Post 5!
Are you ready for a Bartending Competition? We are back in White River Junction, with more exciting news these days. From great restaurants, cafés, pies, theatre, decor and revolution clothing, we now have a modern two-fold space at 188 South Main Street. This is The Engine Room, an apt name in that it is part of the whole freight house complex that also houses Elixir Restaurant. Susan B. Apel wrote a perfect piece about this large hall - click here - a networking, sharing-space and technology hub with lightning-speed internet access and membership options open weekdays from 9 until 5.
Fast forward a couple of months, and we discover that this little engine by day may become a little powerhouse by night with events being lined up for the post 5 o'clock crowd. It looks like we are on the verge of a fun, lively and welcoming bar and lounge scene right in downtown White River. Amy Robb, executive director, and Devin Elder are getting ready to welcome patrons the first week of April. The lounge will be open Wednesday through Sunday from 5pm to 1:00 am. Besides your basic booze and cocktails, shots and fiery liquids, they will offer a revolving wine list, AND, they are planning on unique selections, not your run-of-the-mill labels. The best part for me, as a food obsessor, is the eventual addition of some tapas-style snacks. Devin mentioned that they are working with local eateries. Imagine snacks from Piecemeal Pies or Trail Break's Taps and Tacos (coming soon...See? Even more in WRJ!) This might also entice local artists and actors after performances at the Northern Stage...
BUT, to get things started, mark your calendars and iphones for this Monday night the 13th March with a Bartender Competition. When I visited with them, there were dozens of colorful bottles of alcohol decorating the counters as they prepared. This competition is for people wishing to display their cocktail creativity, for others tired of shaking that haggard martini, or just to learn new bartending tricks. Aspiring bartenders : this is the moment to show off your drink-mixing prowess. Participants must hold/obtain a valid Vermont Liquor Serving Certificate. They must be 21 years of age or older. They must also come up with a cocktail name after 'Silver Cougar' (sugar rim) or 'Mama Mia' (Use 'silver', 'cougar', 'mama' or 'mia) Furthermore, participants must create one or two additional cocktail recipes. There is a $10 fee for these drinks' masters and they are to contact Devin should they require any special ingredients. Contestants will be judged on creativity, personality and presentation. The contest is from 5pm until 8pm.
A cash prize goes to the top contestants as well as an opportunity to work at The Engine Room. For technical questions and querries, contact Devin at 802-522-9081 or with email : Delder93@gmail.com or EngineRoomVT@gmail.com.
