My grandkids were here for part of their school vacation last week. In the swimming melee at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center, they encountered a buddy from their old school here in Wilder.
I'm not going to say which ones were which color. It doesn't matter. What matters were the full body hugs and instant jump start for fun.
I like to think that I have played a part in this, but not likely. Kids are smarter than grownups on this stuff. But I will say this: my version of this kind of fun is when I encounter folks who are don't look like me and I simply say hello--with a smile, and use some lame excuse so we can start talking. I have met some of the loveliest, most interesting, sometimes hurting people.
Heres the thing. I come from a long line of extroverts, gabbers, characters and people addicts. And what a blast it has been! I've had a few series-of-unfortunate-events along the way, but who cares?
It is worth it. You are worth it. And so am I.
So if you have an issue with race, just grow up. Become a child again.
