The last class is in the books! The 2 week pre-op diet has started. I have joined a gym and I am less than 10 days away from surgery! It all feels so unreal!
Last Thursday in less than stellar weather I traveled to DHMC with my mom to attend my last 2 hour class. This class was handled as a question and answer session. They would ask us questions and we would answer them. Basically to make sure we read the materials and to make sure we understood and were ready for what we embarking on. Up first was the dietitian. After her hour there was a quiz. I have learned so much from her. Eat your protein first. Take small bites, and chew, chew, chew! We also went over what supplements we would be on forever.
The second hour was with the nurse practitioner. She went over what to expect while in the hospital and the first few weeks of recovery. Again, super informative. The team at DHMC is great! She went over what to bring to the hospital with you (comfy clothes, headset, reading material, slippers, etc). She also went over the best way to recover, lots of rest but also lots of walking.
I’ve been on the pre-op diet since last Wednesday. I am on day 7 and so far I haven’t gotten “hangry”. I have gotten hungry, so I just sipped some more water, or or had a high protein snack. I haven’t had too much trouble staying within the 800-1000 calorie range. I log all my food, water, and exercise into myfitnesspal app and it keeps me honest.
I wrote last week that I joined a new gym. No, I haven’t gone every day. I joined on February 3rd and I have been 4 times. I went every other day last week. Not bad for a beginner. On Friday I did an hour on the seated elliptical. On Saturday I didn’t go to the gym but I did a 30 minute you-tube yoga video at home. I am pleased with my start. I know I have a long ways to go, but you have to start somewhere. I will get to a place where I will be exercising in some form every day, even if it isn’t at the gym.
8 days until surgery! Hard to believe when I started this journey about 10 months ago. I am excited and nervous. I am ready for this next stage of life. It is full of new beginnings.
