This Land Is Whose Land?

Taftsville Self Storage is actually a Hartland business.

How can the driveway of Shepard Interior Selections start in Hartford and appear in Woodstock when the building is actually in Hartland?

There’s an odd 3/4 mile stretch on Route 4 where several towns and villages run together.

Woodstock meets Taftsville, which meets Quechee and Hartford and sandwiched between them is Hartland - a town whose center is eight miles away.

It’s little known and little publicized that Route 4 is home to several Hartland businesses.

Taftsville Self Storage, for example, is actually in Hartland as is Salon del Sol, Andrew Pearce Wooden Bowls Factory Store, Britton’s Lumber & Hardware and Green Mountain Climbing Center.

The Hartland select board has joked about putting two “Welcome to Hartland" signs on Route 4 to mark their territory, but it would add one more name to the confusion.

The confusion impacts Britton’s Lumber vendors at least a couple times a week, said store manager Rally Colton.

“Between Quechee, Hartford, Taftsville and Woodstock all being in this area, it definitely throws people off,” he said.

He said they guide customers as much as they can.

"Our address is Taftsville, however on Google Maps, GPS a lot of times it comes up as Hartland because technically that’s where we are,” he said.
