Fire destroys Frederick Johnson Pianos in White River Junction
Half dozen departments fighting rolling blaze
WHITE RIVER JUNCTION - The Frederick Johnson Piano store was destroyed by a stubborn blaze that began in the basement around 10 p.m. Thursday evening and had flames shooting up through the roof an hour later.
Hartford firefighters were joined at the scene by additional ladder trucks from Hanover and Norwich as well as mutual aid engine companies from Hartland and Lebanon.
The fire was still burning as midnight approached and all companies had retreated to the outside of the structure which sits in the valley immediately below the VA Hospital tucked in between the Super 8 motel and Jasmin Auto.
The devastated couple who own the business were on scene at 1 a.m. but were too distraught to discuss the situation at that hour beyond saying that the store had been a fixture in the area since the 1970s.
