Sally Bacon is a jewelry designer and the founder of Oodles, a shop in White River Junction that features jewelry and clothing, antiques, art and crafts. She shares the shop with Petey the poodle, who is 3½.
How and when did Oodles get started?
About four years ago, I moved back to the Upper Valley from Phoenix, and I wanted to do something. Although I loved having my jewelry in galleries, there wasn’t the customer contact. It’s very fancy-shmancy having your stuff in galleries but you don’t know who buys it, how they loved it, whatever.
A friend of mine in Orford -- I live in Orford, New Hampshire -- a friend of mine had an antique shop in a garage, the old filling station. She rented me a room and I just sold my jewelry. That was in 2010. That went really well, and I moved over to Fairlee, to a little house, and added stuff. Then this space in White River became available and I came and looked at it and said, I have to try, I have to do it. I’ll be here, it’ll be three years in November.
What’s the best thing about it?
The best thing about Oodles is it is so eclectic. What I love about it is that men love my store too. It’s not just women. It is a fun, fascinating, provocative shop. You’re likely to find anything here, and it really stirs the imagination. It’s a feel-good place.
What’s the most challenging aspect of it?
Trying to figure out when people actually shop. I love New England, I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else, I love Vermont: They aren’t big shoppers. If it’s a beautiful day, they’re in their garden. If it’s a snowy day, they’re on the slopes.
If you’re out West, people shop all the time. It’s all they do. They shop and spend their money; they can’t spend enough money. Here, it’s not like that. So just finding what they’ll spend their money on, and when they do it.
What’s your favorite Upper Valley thing to do when you’re not here?
My favorite Upper Valley thing to do when I’m not here is to be with friends. Community, it’s what I love about here. I love to just -- I don’t care what it is -- but it’s being with people here in the Upper Valley.
