Student Perspectives: Media Arts Program Offers Job Experience
The mission statement at the Hartford Area Career and Technology Center (HACTC) is the following: Respect. Engage. Learn. Work. Serve. Grow. These statements are not just something teachers and students say, they are something that we follow. Students all over the area come together to accomplish these statements.
Nicole Walker: I have gained more from being a student at HACTC than I could have ever imagined. As a homeschooled student, I was able to attend the tech center in my Junior year in the Design, Illustration and Media Arts (DIMA) class. Here I have been able to expand my knowledge and get a feel for what direction I want to go in my career. I have had the opportunity to take live jobs, go on field trips with my class, and get involved in group projects. I have grown more as a person in the past year than I have in my entire life. I have met so many amazing people at this school, experienced new things, and built relationships that I hope will continue long after high school. The teachers here have been more than encouraging, as well as the principal Mr. Heavisides, who always takes the time to check in on each of the students, taking interest in all of our current projects, and helping us come together as one.
Grace Veracka: I have also been part of the DIMA program for a little over a year, and I am so happy with what I have been able to accomplish here. This includes working on live jobs, putting my artwork into an art gallery, and even being able to join the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) club. The teachers and students at the Tech Center are some of the nicest people you will ever meet. Mr. Heavisides and all the teachers at the Tech Center see the best out of everyone and the talent in every individual here. As a hands-on learner and someone who was looking for a little more to do in high school, HACTC is the place to be. I recommend the HACTC to everyone who is looking to meet new people, find their talent and be recognized for it, and to have their options opened up. I know I did.
Adam Potter: Why did I want to be a part of the HACTC? One word, experience. That is the word that best explains the reason why I wanted to be a part of the HACTC. The one thing I’ve enjoyed the most here is meeting students from other schools. I’m in the DIMA program, a class of 15 students, each varying in sending schools, whether they be from Hartford, Lebanon, Mascoma, Thetford, or home study. At the HACTC, learning to the staff does not just mean a letter grade, it’s a opportunity for students to grow.
