Protests on Campus Today in Hanover and Dartmouth College History January 22 1986
The Anti-Apartheid Protest Shanties were destroyed overnight on the Dartmouth Green
Today as we reflect on the number and size of peaceful protests that occurred across our nation and the protest and counter protest that occurred on campus last Friday, I believe that when considering the state of our country and community, it is important to consider the outcome of the anti-apartheid protest.
The Dartmouth College administration has supported the right of the students expression of free speech this was evident on Friday. It was also evident in November of 1985 when four shanties were erected in the middle of the Green.
The Dartmouth Winter Carnival Theme for 1986 was "Wild Things". The protesters agreed to move the Shanties to allow for the construction of the annual snow sculpture.
