How Much Does it Cost to Run a Death Star?
Dartmouth math prof helps calculate the bottom line.
It takes a whole lot of money to build an evil empire. Take the Death Star featured in the latest Star Wars movie Rogue One. Dartmouth math professor Alexander Barnett was part of a team that calculated it cost $7.8 octillion per day to run the machine.
That's $7,800,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 or about 30 TRILLION times all the money on Earth.
The little things add up. Lighting the machine costs $52 billion per day. Laundry for the crew is another $200 million. But the big bang for the buck is the cost of the blowing up a planet . Firing the laser one time costs an estimated $8 octillion.
While the Death Star is arguably a nifty weapon for galactic conquest, the economics of the machine are not sustainable.
"The Death Star would bankrupt the Imperial economy faster than it blew up Alderaan," concluded the financial journalists from Fortune Magazine who read Barnett's report.
