The best books lists are coming out fast and furious. Here are the consensus top novels of 2016 (appearing on at least 5 top lists*):

Colson Whitehead, The Underground Railroad (The National Book Award winner and also the book most often listed as #1 of the year)

Jacqueline Woodson, Another Brooklyn

Yaa Gyasi, Homegoing

Elizabeth Strout, My Name Is Lucy Barton

Louise Erdrich, LaRose

Ann Patchett, Commonwealth

Zadie Smith, Swing Time

Michael Chabon, Moonglow

Annie Proulx, Barkskins

I TOTALLY recommend NPR's Book Concierge list of best books, because you can filter the list by standard genres and other, quirkier categories, such as "Eye-Opening Reads," "Rather Short," "Let's Talk About Sex," and "It's All Greek to Me."

*The lists include The New York Times, Washington Post, Time, Publisher's Weekly, Kirkus Reviews, Amazon, Book Riot, IndieNext, LibraryReads, prize long lists (National Book, Mann Booker). I rely on EarlyWord.com's compilation for most of the lists.
