Memory Tree Lighting in Vershire 12/3
Vershire Historical Society Celebrates Holidays, Honors Memories
All are welcome to join the annual holiday celebration of the Vershire Historical Society at 4 pm this Saturday, December 2. The Memory Tree lighting is a tradition in Vershire that goes back long before current President Gary Goodrich's tenure of 12 years, and is perhaps more than two decades old. Each light on the evergreen outside the Historical Society wing of the Vershire Town Center represents someone remembered by a friend or loved one who has made a donation of $3 to the Historical Society. Gary will read the names aloud while all are gathered indoors, then the group will proceed outside to circle the tree and sing Silent Night. More caroling will follow, once again inside, along with hot chocolate and visiting.
Anyone attending the event is welcome to contribute to the list of names and fundraising, Vershire residents or not. The tree will remain lit through January at least, though at times it has continued shining through Town Meeting. There are four hundred brand new LED lights ready to adorn the tree, though perhaps not quite that many will be needed. There may be a couple hundred names, however.
Gary reflects that it's “... important to remember people who passed especially in your family, especially around this time of year, Thanksgiving and Christmas, just to let them know you’re still thinking about them. There are always new names of people who have passed in the last year. It's emotional for some people, and it brings people together." He also observes that the tree may represent Christmas or any other holiday or tradition, as well as nature, and is an important symbol.
The Vershire Historical Society meets regularly on the first Thursday each month, but has held its final meeting for this year. Membership is $5 annually. Please visit the Vershire Historical Society Facebook page for more information and updates.
