Had an interesting conversation yesterday with another landowner who has trails across his land. He said he always has supported the idea of public access in theory but for the first time is beginning to have concerns about the impact of that access upon the other flora and fauna on his land. In particular, he says he's see more an more dogs running free, splashing through vernal pools, and generally roaming all over away from trails in ways he now thinks may be suppressing wildlife. We used to worry most about the damage bike ruts do to trails, but hadn't anticipated that dog roaming pressure might have this effect. How many dogs are too many in the backwoods?
