We've chosen five wines we think will especially suit your Thanksgiving table. They're all great for different reasons, and a few of them are hard to find around here -- except at Norwich Wines & Spirits. (But a word of warning: Don't wait to come in until Wednesday -- you might be disappointed.)
You'll find us open 9-6 every day except Sunday, and 9-7 on Fridays, right in Norwich Square in downtown Norwich.
Pine Ridge Chenin Blanc/Viognier: This is a bright, crisp white. It's 17 percent Viognier, which gives it just enough fruit and aroma to let it stand up to pretty much anything you'll put on your Thanksgiving table. It's a fantastic value at $11.99 -- you'll find it elsewhere around here, but you'll pay more.
Anton Bauer Gmork, 2015: A dry, minerally Austrian white. Imagine being outside just after it's rained; suddenly the sun comes out and shines on the rocks around you -- that's the lovely, complex smell of this wine. Also a great value at $12.99
Le Pianette Toscana, 2013: Made by a tiny producer in Tuscany, this is a Sangiovese blend that's rounder and softer than your typical Chianti. The result is a perfectly balanced wine for Thansgiving: not too heavy, not too light, not too dry, not too fruity. It's highly versatile, and will go with just about anything you put in front of your guests. $13.99
Michel-Schlumberger Maison Rouge, 2012: Ignore the bland marketing-speak they put on the label. This is a full-bodied blend that's deep, dark and rich. It's a perfect marriage of France and California -- full of flavor, without the explosion of fruit that California wines lean toward. This one's perfect for you if you believe Pinot Noirs are too light. $12.99
Beaujolais 2015: Okay, here's the deal. Beaujolais gets a bad rap because people tend to identify it with insipid Beaujolais Nouveaux. But when the wine is painstakingly made from old vines, it's one of the most versatile food wines on the planet. The Gamay grape has a balance of fruit and acidity that not only tastes good, it actually stimulates digestions. So when you're eating a huge meal, this wine will not only taste wonderful with pretty much everything, it'll help you digest it, as well. We've got several excellent examples, at various prices.
