Windy, Snowy Playoff win for Hartford Boys Soccer
Canes Boys Soccer advances to Quarter Finals
By John Seaver
Last Tuesday the temperature topped 80 degrees on a beautiful, sunny autumn day. One week later, the temperature was in the 30’s with strong gusty winds & blowing snow and felt like mid winter.
On the strength of a dominating 2nd half, the
Hurricane boy’s soccer team dispatched a feisty Mill River squad with a 3-1 win
Tuesday at Maxfield. The win propels the
Canes into the quarterfinals of the Division II tournament. Senior captain Ben Rouillard got the scoring
started in the 7th minute when he got a foot on the end of a Matt
Libuda chip. The play was made possible by
Pat McGlone after he made a deep run that took him all the way to end line for
a cross that was deflected out to Libuda. Mill River goalie Austin MacMurray couldn’t
get a body part on the shot and the Canes had a 1-0 lead.
But the 12th seeded Minutemen, who were decided
underdogs coming into the match, were undeterred and just 6 minutes later
scored the equalizer when forward Simon Smith won the race to a well placed through
ball with Jordy Allard and squeezed a shot past the Hartford keeper to tie the
score at 1-1.
Mill River had the wind advantage in the first half and
played the 5th seeded Canes even the first 40 minutes taking the 1-1
tie into the half.
However, the Hurricanes stormed out of the halftime break
and dominated the 2nd half. Less
than 1 minute into the 2nd half, Nick Jones took a feed deep into the
box but Mill River keeper MacMurray came out and cut the angle on the shot. The deflected shot bounced to the top of the
box where Pat McGlone calmly deposited into the net above the leaping head of
Mill River defender Seemus Hartigan to give the Canes a 2-1 lead.
The goal seemed to energize the home team as McGlone & Rouillard
continued to cause problems for the Mill River defense and create scoring
opportunities for the Canes. MacMurray
made a nice save on a hard shot by McGlone and Rouillard just missed on a
header off a short corner feed from McGlone.
Kyle Prior almost got on the sheet with a header off the post from a
long direct kick from the other side of midfield and Callum Brittain fire a
shot just wide of the net. Finally with 12
minutes left Hartford got an insurance goal when Rouillard drove a low shot
from the right side of the box to the left corner of the goal for the final
score and a 3-1 Hurricane win.
