Senior Night is Winning Night for Hurricanes
Girls win 4th Straight Senior Night Game 3-0 over Springfield
The Hartford girls soccer team has been struggling to score goals going 0-2-2 over their last 4 games so Senior Night couldn't have come at a better time as it was the seniors that led the Canes to a 3-0 win over Springfield Thursday night. The win broke a 4 game win less streak and a 390+ minute goal less streak.
The game & night celebrated 9 seniors and their families with the traditional game under the lights on the Hartford football field. Coach Jeff Acker placed all 9 seniors in the starting lineup & that lineup played the first 11 minutes before the normal starters began subbing in.
The match was slow to get going as the Hurricanes had a few decent chances early. Abbie Koff had one shot deflected out of play & two more shots that cleared the cross bar. Meanwhile Hartford keeper Morgan White was untested by the Cosmos as the Hurricane D kept everything out of the box.
The Canes finally broke thru at 32' after a scrum ensued off a short corner kick & defender Kaylee Williams took a deflected ball, moved to her left & drove a shot off the goalies hands and over the line. Abigail Robbins was there on the doorstep to make sure there was no doubt but the goal was awarded to Williams unassisted.
The 2nd half was all Hartford as Sarah Jones began feeding her teammates with great passes. One at 44' to Jennifer Ladka and another at 46' to Belle Leister, both of which were just out of reach. Jones then made a perfect pass from the left side of the box to the right with Leister burying the header to make it 2-0 at 52'. Jones then feathered a pass to defender Lyndsie Rice near the top of the box and Rice powered a shot into the top, left corner for the final score to make it 3-0.
Coach Acker on his teams effort "I was especially pleased to get 2 goals from the back line. We have defended very well all season, and we've been talking about trying to get our backs more involved in the attack to make us more dynamic. We are a really difficult team to play against because our backs are so well synchronized and tenacious, and when we get goals from them as well, that's just icing on the cake."
Category 5 Hurricane Player of the Game: Sarah Jones. She moved the ball exceptionally well tonight setting up multiple scoring chances for her teammates. The senior forward had 2 assists and controlled play in the center of the field all night.
Game Notes: Hartford swept the season series with Springfield 6-1 & 3-0. The win moves the Canes to 5-3-4 on the season and they remain in the top 8 of division 2 and are in line for their first home playoff game since 2012. It was defenders Williams & Rice's first goals of the season.
Hartford's Seniors: Lyndsie Rice (Captain), Kyra Wood (Captain), Kaylee Williams, Kenna Hausler, Maeve Sneddon, Jennifer Ladka, Belle Leister, Sarah Jones, Abigail Robbins. #9
