Hurricane Girls Battle Brattleboro to 0-0 Tie
Many Chances, No Goals
By John Seaver
The Hartford girls soccer team did everything right Wednesday night except score goals. In a game under the lights at the high school football field vs division 1 Brattleboro, the Hurricanes dominated play for large stretches of the match but couldn't find the back of the net. The onslaught of shots started early and often but the Colonels keeper, Megyn Ayotte, was up to the task. Just 5 minutes into the game she made two great saves, one on a corner kick and the other on a long shot off the foot of Hartford midfielder Kyra Wood, both times leaping to stop shots heading under the crossbar.
The Canes keeper Morgan White had a relatively quiet night compared to her counterpart but did make a nice save at 38' of the first half to keep the game scoreless.
The Hurricanes turned up the heat to start the second half with a near miss by Ileana Sirois at 43' and a Sarah Jones shot off the crossbar at 46'. Two minutes later the Canes got a break on a questionable foul in the box and were awarded a penalty kick. Belle Leister blasted a shot with her left foot that Ayotte made a diving save and then deflected the rebound out of harms way to keep the score knotted at 0-0.
Ayotte continued to be the story of the game with a save on Maeve Sneddon at point blank range & a tough angle shot by Alice Dwyer. A few minutes later, Sirois just missed on a nice header off a Maddie Koff corner kick with the ball going just over the crossbar.
As the game went into overtime I live Tweeted that the Canes held a 200-5 shot advantage in regulation time and I was only half kidding.
In overtime Hartford had several more great chances. In the first minute Sarah Jones got free and drove a shot just wide right. A great effort play by freshamn McKenna Druge almost resulted in the game winner. Druge battled a Colonel defender on the right sideline, went around her and made a beautiful centering pass that Leister couldn't quite reach.
But in the end, the Hurricanes couldn't solve Brattleboro keeper Megyn Ayotte. She isn't a Hurricane so she can't be the Category 5 player of the game but without her tonight the Colonels lose 5 or 6 to nothing.
Hurricanes record stands at 4-2-3 and they remain solidly in the top 8 of the D2 standings. Brattleboro's record moves to 2-6-1 on the year. The Hurricane girls next game is Friday at Woodstock. Game time 4:00.
Tonight's game was a fund raiser for the Susan G Komen foundation. The Hurricanes dressed in pink jerseys and the game played with pink soccer balls to raise awareness for Breast Cancer.
