Bicyclist dies in Charlestown collision
50-year-old resident swerved into path of car
CHARLESTOWN, NH - A Charlestown resident was killed on his bicycle on Route 12 Monday afternoon when he abruptly swerved in front of a car, state police are reporting.
Police have identified the victim as 50-year-old Lance Torrey of Charlestown who was transported by rescuers to Springfield Hospital and pronounced dead there shortly after the 4 p.m. collision.
The accident took place on Route 12 near the intersection with Route 12A in Charlestown.
The driver of the car, Jeremiah Lawrence, 23, of Claremont was not hurt and police said neither speed nor alcohol were factors in the crash. Police added that it now appears unlikely that any criminal charges will be filed in connection with the fatal mishap.
“The preliminary investigation determined that the bicyclist was traveling north on Route 12 in the northbound breakdown lane when for unknown reasons he veered into the northbound travel lane into the path of a northbound Acura Integra which struck him,” New Hampshire State Police Trooper Charles Newton explained in a press release Monday evening.
“The New Hampshire State Police are handling the investigation and were assisted on scene by members of the Charlestown Police Department and the Charlestown Fire and Rescue Departments,” the statement continued, noting, “Route 12 was closed and traffic diverted in the area for approximately four hours while the scene was documented.”
The collision remains under formal investigation and anyone with any additional information is asked to contact Trooper Charles Newton at (603) 223-8494.
