The cab was disconnected from the trailer and the firemen had to cut holes in the trailer so they could get some water on the smoldering wood chips. During the fire, a section of Route 11 was closed to traffic and all cars and trucks were detoured onto Lower Main Street in Sunapee.

Route 11 was reopened after 3 PM once the fire had been extinguished and the scene was cleared. The woodchips were later brought to Hemphill Power and Light woodchip power plant in Springfield New Hampshire and disposed of.
