Canes Football Improves to 2-0
Dominate 2nd Half powers the Canes
By John Seaver
The Hartford Hurricanes football team used a dominate second half to pull away from a tough Colchester team to win 32-7. The highlight of the night for the Lakers was an opening kick off returned all the way to the Hurricane 10 yard line by Matt Hesford. 3 plays later QB Alex O'Connell connected with TE Charlie Powell to give Colchester the 7-0 lead just 1 minute into the game. Just 2 minutes later, Hartford responded to make the score 7-6 when Kody Rhodes scored on a 12 yard run set up by a kick return to mid field and a 35 yard run by Tyler Hamilton and a shootout was brewing.
However, both teams settled in with the defenses making the plays. The Lakers did a nice job early on bottling up the Canes rushing attack led last week by Brett McClaren and Rhodes. The Canes defense made a huge defensive stand at the beginning of the 2nd quarter stopping the Lakers at their goal line to keep the score at 7-6. Hartford's Bailey Nott broke through the line and sacked Laker QB O'Connell to force another Laker punt with 3:43 left in the half. The Hurricanes then went to their passing game to take a 13-7 lead with just 1:19 left in the half. QB Gavin Farnsworth hit McClaren on a dump off and McClaren rumbled 44 yards to the Laker 17. Then Farnsworth lofted a TD pass to a wide open Jack Elder to give the Canes the halftime lead.
The second half was dominated by the Hurricanes as the defense stifled the Laker offense while the Canes running game began to wear down the home team defense. RB Tyler Hamilton who had a big night got the 2nd half scoring started with a 53 yard run down the right sidelines on a toss sweep play. Hamilton looked like he was going to be tackled or knocked out of bounds around the 10 but did a great job of eluding the tackler and stretched the ball over the goal line right at the pylon to give the Canes a 20-7 lead.
Hartford added another score just before the end of the 3rd quarter when Rhodes powered up the middle from 7 yards out. The PAT was no good and the lead was now 26-7 heading into the 4th quarter.
QB Farnsworth ended the scoring on a QB keeper from the 1 to give the Hurricanes a 32-7 lead with 3:09 left in the game. On the drive Farnsworth carried it himself the last 5 plays eluding & frustrating Laker tacklers.
The Hartford D was supported by sacks from Nott, Austin Shepard & Justin Koloski & several big tackles by Hamilton.
Category 5 Hurricane Player of the Game: Tyler Hamilton - 135 yards rushing on just 6 carries, 1 TD & several nice plays on defense.
Hartford (2-0) next plays a non-league game vs Catholic Memorial at home Friday Sep 16.
