Hurricane Girls Soccer Grind out 2-2 Tie vs Mill River in Season Opener
Morgan White Saves The Day
By John Seaver
Last season Hartford girls soccer shared the MVL title with Mill River and after Saturday morning's exciting 2-2 tie at Maxfield these two teams appear headed to the top of the MVL standings again this year. Mill River carried the play for most of the first half with Olivia McPhee scoring the opening goal at the 9' mark. For the next 31 minutes Canes junior keeper Morgan White kept her team in the game with several outstanding saves, none better than the back to back saves she made at the end of the first half. Trailing 1-0 in the last minute of the half, Mill River was awarded a PK after a foul in the box. White made the initial save of Melissa Fay's PK, jumped to her feet and saved Rylee Nichols rebound shot. Seemingly energized, the Canes tied the score on the ensuing rush with a Lyndsie Rice goal off a sweet cross by Sarah Jones with just :02 on the clock.
Mill River's Rylee Nichols opened the scoring 2 minutes into the second half with a long range shot over the outstretched hands of White and just under the crossbar. 4 minutes later Hartford tied the score after a great individual effort by Sarah Jones. Jones dribbled thru and around several Mill River players before freeing herself for the shot and goal.
The rest of the second half was more evenly played as the Canes defense tightened up on Mill River's Rylee Nichols who was dangerous all game with shots off the crossbar and post. Coach Jeff Acker made an adjustment and Freshman Abby Koff got the assignment to mark Nichols. "Very gutsy by her" said Acker. "She had been out for a week with an injury and yesterday was her first day back. I think she played 70+ minutes. We made the adjustment and totally took her out of the game, was the key to the 2nd half."
Both teams had chances near the end of regulation and overtime but the game ended in a 2-2 tie.
