6th Annual Race to Support Healthy Living
"I started running when I was 14, with my father, back when it wasn't something people did", said Catherine Freese, the Sharon school librarian. Almost fifty years later, Mrs. Freese still runs, and is trying to instill this love of running in the elementary school students, but also in the community.
Six years ago, in 2010, she and other community members organized the first Sprouty, a 5K and 10K race in Sharon, Vermont. "Miriam Rubin, who was working at the Sharon town offices, had the idea" she said. And then Mrs. Rubin recruited a few other people from the community to help organize this event. The Sprouty has attracted many runners from the Upper Valley, and they have been steadily increasing participation. "We had about 130 runners last year", and they are hoping to have more this year. The Upper Valley Running Club has included the 10K race in their 2016 race series, which has brought some new runners this year.
The purpose of the Sprouty is to raise money to support the purchase of locally grown food for the school’s meals program and to promote healthy living for all ages. Last year, they raised about $1,000, mainly from sponsors and donations. "The entry fee covers the purchase of the t-shirt, and the company that times the race", she said. This year, they are hoping to raise more. To help them in this effort, the The Skinny Pancake will be there to make crepes at the end of the race. Also, local musicians Still More Cats 2, a local band, will be playing music. And Dandelion Acres is providing a small prize (lettuce) for all runners. "Local companies, but also the Town of Sharon have been very generous," she added, "we couldn't raise this money without their participation".
The race relies also heavily on volunteers, and "we always need more" she added laughing.
The Sprouty also includes a free Fun Loop for kids, to introduce them to running.

The event will take place Saturday September 10. It begins at 9 a.m. with the 5K/10K, and will be followed with the free Fun Loop for children at 10:15 a.m.
