February 3 was a day just like any other. Until, it wasn't. Because it was the day I heard the news that would change my life forever.
"EXTRA! EXTRA! BEN & JERRY'S RELEASES NEW VEGAN ICE CREAM!"
After hearing an old timey newspaper boy yell the news in the street .... I mean ... after reading the headline on my computer, I leaned back in my chair, dramatically removed my glasses and said, "My. God."
I hadn't realized how much I needed vegan Ben & Jerry's until it was dangled in front of me. And today, my friends, I got to experience the sweet, luscious ecstasy that is Ben & Jerry's once again (*Because I am an annoying vegan who does not consume animal products, and therefore does not eat real ice cream anymore.)
As I stared in awe at the voluptuous, sparkling pints in the freezer section of the Hanover Co-Op, I contemplated which flavor should be the one to pop my vegan Ben & Jerry's cherry: chunky monkey because I love bananas (and chocolate?); Chocolate Fudge Brownie (because yes, I love chocolate); PB & Cookies because it combines two things that just really belong together; or the unusual but seductive Coffee Caramel Fudge? Or ... Why not all four?
Yes, yes. All four it was.
Now that the ice cream stupor has worn off, it is with a clear head that I share my favorites, in order of least favorite, to rocked-my-entire-world favorite.
4. Chocolate Fudge Brownie
Yeah, I was surprised too! Chocolate? Great. Fudge brownie? EVEN BETTER. But something didn't quite taste right about this one. It wasn't bad, just not as creamy as the others. It tastes like a fudgsicle (too lazy to Google the correct spelling of this word; you get the point.)
3. P.B. & Cookies
You know, I thought this one would be my favorite! But again, not as creamy compared to the others. Definitely delicious though. I think the cookies and peanut butter sort of beat out the ice cream base in this case. (Hey, accidental rhyming is cool!)
2. Chunky Monkey
I LOVE bananas, and this ice cream has real bananas in it; not that fake, flavored crap. There are also chunks of chocolate which we already know is a huge deal for me. The ice cream is creamy and smooth. Downside: Not a huge fan of walnuts.
1. Coffee Caramel Fudge
Guys, I don't even LIKE coffee ice cream. But this ... this is something else. I actually let out a low "ohhh yeahhhh" when it first melted on my tongue. Ice cream lovers will probably disagree with me on this, but this little pint of love tastes like the real deal. I'm talkin' creamy, sweet, melt-in -your-mouth, gooey ... all the awesome things that make ice cream the best. The caramel swirl is the perfect complement. And ... AND there's chocolate in it. Everybody wins. I give it an A+; would try again in a heartbeat.
(*Update: The Hanover and Lebanon co-ops both carry Non-Dairy B&J.)
(*Note #2: Another great vegan ice cream option is So Delicious cashew milk ice cream. Try the salted caramel cluster. Oh, baby.)
