Local columnist, Becky Munsterer of Norwich, talks bootcamp and Popeyes Chicken with Wayne Burwell, personal trainer at Wayne's World Elite Fitness Training in Lebanon, New Hampshire.
If Wayne's World had a fitness mantra? What would it be?
What’s your own workout ritual?
Are you as serious about your diet as you as your fitness levels? Do you have any guilty pleasures? I plan and make all of my meals for the week, and ninety percent of the time, I eat “clean” (whatever that means.) Brigadeiro in Hanover is owned by one of my clients and I will treat myself to chocolate because it is ridiculously good. But Popeyes Chicken would be my vice if there was one anywhere close to here. There’s one right across from Fenway, and another near 95 north in Maine.
What's the best motivational song for a workout? “Looking for You” by Kirk Franklin.
Where's the best location in the Upper Valley for a post-workout meal? My kitchen or my fridge or the Wayne’s World eatery. I fix all my meals so I wouldn’t leave to eat anywhere else anyway…
Any particular success stories at Wayne's World which have inspired you? I had a favorite client before I worked at Wayne’s World who was paralyzed from the waist down from a skiing accident. Although we knew it would take years, I promised him that he would ski again. On the day he got back on skis, I left my national track meet and flew to Squaw Valley to ski with him. It was pretty amazing, but being there for him was even more amazing.
What's the best movie for inspiration to break a sweat? “Any Given Sunday.” It’s a football movie with a great motivational speech. The speech will get you outside and working hard immediately. (You might even finish the movie AFTER you are done working out.) It's Al Pacino at his best.
If you only have five minutes to work out, what's the best exercise to get your heart pumping? Nothing. If I only have five minutes, that means I didn’t plan my day properly. Working out for 5 minutes is just like one Tic Tac… it’s just not enough.
Thumbs up or thumbs down for sweatbands? Two big thumbs down, but to each his own.
Thumbs up or thumbs down for Sweatin' To The Oldies (with Richard Simmons)? It’s hard to believe that Sweatin’ To The Oldies was even a thing, But, I will give him a thumbs up because Richard Simmons touched people’s lives in this industry and everyone in fitness should aspire to be as great. Most trainers are just in fitness, but I’m “in” fitness. I live it, I love it, and I won’t stop until I touch as many people’s lives as possible.
Thumbs up or thumbs down for "Gonna Make You Sweat" by C and C Music Factory? Thumbs down. I can’t stand that song.
Thumbs up or thumbs down for sweat-inducing sriracha hot sauce? Thumbs up. I love hot food.
Can you describe yourself in a paragraph? My mentor said you can’t be all things to all people, and I told him I would never stop trying. I am passionate about what I do, and I want to change the world through fitness… one life at a time. I am a blessed and loving individual with the greatest daughter ever! I love what I do, so it’s never work!
Anything else you want us to know about Wayne's World? I hope I can continue to be part of all the individuals’ lives that train at our gym. I want to be part of their success. Wayne’s World… we’re just one big happy family!
