Last Saturday morning my husband and I headed to Market Table in Hanover for breakfast to find crowds already gathering in town for what we later found out to be Dartmouth’s Woodsmen’s Weekend. Feeling pessimistic we wouldn’t find a table anywhere, let alone a place to park, we took the one vacant space right in front of The Nugget as a good sign.
We walked through Market Table’s front door to find a quiet, uninhabited dining room, and a sleepy-eyed deli on the other side where two patrons sat quietly at tables and a third ordered from the barista. We were unsure if the “Please wait to be seated” sign posted at the dining room entrance applied to us, but were quickly reassured when a server emerged to take us to a table near the back.
To my delight, as this is probably my favorite meal of the day, brunch menus were presented. (Side note: Market Table’s website confirms they started Saturday Brunch earlier this year, because of their Sunday Brunch’s success.) The two items at the top confirmed my delighted mood – orange juice with Prosecco, and a Bloody Mary. Farther down the menu were good-looking savory and sweet options…egg dishes, corned beef hash, French toast, char-grilled salmon, salads, a veggie wrap, a ham and caramelized onion sandwich, and desserts - ice cream, flourless chocolate cake and crème brulee. Where do we start?
I ordered the Bloody Mary, followed by what had also caught my eye initially – an omelet with arugula, portobello mushrooms and cheddar. My husband also opted for the Bloody, as well as the poached eggs served with ham and hollandaise on rounds of brioche. All made with local ingredients – I could imagine the freshness!
As we sat discussing our day’s plan, we realized some of the tables around us were set for large groups and finally put it together that most of the restaurant was reserved for the morning. We considered ourselves lucky to have come in at the right time – just a minute or two after Brunch had started at 10am.
Our drinks came and wowzer, they were spicy! Not enough to overwhelm the flavor of the cocktail, but still our senses were sparked. Then the entrees arrived – my omelet filled half the plate with plump portobellos poking out. The side of potatoes included both russet and sweet, and greens drizzled with a delicate vinaigrette took up any remaining plate space. I didn’t get a good look at my husband’s entrée because it was half eaten by the time I looked up from my dish. But I gathered it was a hit.
I highly recommend this spot for a pleasant, easy, relaxing brunch on Saturdays…at least at the get-go of 10am. Although I’m pretty sure the food will always be fantastic, no matter what time you go.
