A friend’s recommendation led us to Thai Orchid in downtown Hanover Friday night. It was still early, so we decided to call ahead for a reservation. Not as easy as you might think – the phone line was busy for the 30 minutes my husband spent redialing. Finally, we decided to chance it.
Thai Orchid is located at 44 S. Main Street on the third level, which is accessible by elevator and stairs. We walked in to observe the restaurant in serious action. Not knowing the process of getting a table, we stood in a stupor witnessing employees running every which way – a server having a look at the specials board, another running to pick up the phone. All without acknowledging us. Finally, who we assumed to be the host came from the dining room and greeted us with a big smile and menus. He escorted us to a booth.
The weekend’s arrival was definitely being celebrated, as the place was loud. Surprising, as we’d heard that it’s normally a quiet place. Fine by me, as I wanted a bit of a scene (I work from home and have come to appreciate the white noise of stranger chatter). Water glasses were set down, and our server was back in a few minutes to take our order. We chose cocktails from the specialty drink menu, an appetizer of Crab Rangoons, and our entrees – Pad See Ew (wide rice noodles, wok fried) and Kaeng Luang (yellow curry) with tofu.
Within just a few minutes, the appetizer and one entrée came. We started on the Crab Rangoons without hesitation. They were okay – crunchy and a little tough, with a filling that may have included what my seafood-loving husband dubbed as imitation crab. But that didn’t stop us from eating all five deep-fried wontons.
Once finished with the app, my curry dish still hadn’t come. When it did come, I was happy – it was a nice-sized bowl of hearty-looking veggie, potato, and tofu pieces in a beautiful yellow sauce. And it smelled amazing! A bowl of brown rice was offered as a side, as they had run out of white rice.
Before our server left, I reminded her of our drink orders, to which she replied they were still being made. I was curious why it was taking more than 15 minutes…but the thought vanished when they were delivered a minute later.
Both entrees were yummy and included the perfect amounts. Our server checked on how things tasted, which I appreciated; but only 5 minutes later she brought our check without offering anything else.
Pros: The food. There are a lot of choices on the menu, and the food we had was very good (albeit next time we’ll choose something other than the Crab Rangoons). Also a pro are the options for take out and delivery; delivery does include a $2 fuel surcharge plus expected tip.
Cons: The atmosphere could use some updating, including sound-absorbing tiles. The service could’ve run more smoothly and been a smidge friendlier.
