As the weekend approaches, here are some ideas for getting out and exploring events in and around the Upper Valley.
In White River Junction, it's the 7th Annual Green Mt Fiber Festival and Retreat, taking place at the Hotel Coolidge beginning Friday at noon and continuing through the weekend. Admission to this three-day event is free, so it's an opportunity to meet with festival vendors, participate in their knitting retreat, and check on any last-minute class openings.
Sure signs of spring are slowly emerging around the Upper Valley, such as sap buckets on the maples. This weekend, visit one of the many sugar houses in Vermont and New Hampshire that are hosting events: Lunenburg's 10th Maple Festival is on Saturday, and Shelburne Farms' Vermont Maple Open House, The New Hampshire Maple Experience, and Merck Forest's Maple Celebration & Pancake Breakfast will take place both Saturday and Sunday. On Sunday at 1:30, you might also want to do the Maple Open House Weekend Walk at Sunrise Farm in Hartford. There are more maple events on the dailyUV calendar.
Also posted on the calendar for this weekend are a few gardening events. On Saturday and Sunday, there is the Stowe Home and Garden Show, with no admission fee; however, donations are accepted to benefit the Stowe Theatre Guild. At the Lake Sunapee Protective Association Learning Center on Saturday morning, Tressa Gaffney will be teaching a class on pruning...$10 suggested donation and advance registration required. If you are looking for a reason to head up to the Burlington area, consider registering for one of following Saturday classes: The Science of Soil Health at the UVM Horticulture Farm, Cool Annuals with Charlie Nardozzi and Garden Plants with Medicinal Interests with Heather Irvine, both held at Gardener's Supply Company.
