The Tri-Town Committee has selected the engineering firm Dubois & King to
undertake the necessary studies and develop plans for the
repair/reconstruction of the Lake Fairlee dam.
Earlier this spring we prepared a Request for Proposals explaining what we
needed. We sent this to a dozen firms suggested by the Vermont Dam Safety
Engineer. We received serious and voluminous responses from seven firms.
With help from an independent (retired) engineer we evaluated their
proposals and interviewed two finalists. Dubois & King emerged as our
Dubois & King's charge is to develop viable, cost-efficient remediation
alternatives to address the dam's deficiencies. As part of this process
they will perform a topographic survey and prepare the base map that will
be necessary for planning. They will take soil borings as part of a
geotechnical investigation to ascertain just what is under the present dam.
They will conduct a detailed hydrologic and hydraulic analysis of the
watershed and the existing dam to evaluate spillway capacity and evaluating
alternative plans. Finally they will develop alternative design concepts
and construction cost estimates. It is expected that this work will be
accomplished over the next four months.
Dubois & King's full proposal is available at http://lakefairleedam.info.
We will post progress reports as the enumerated studies proceed.
