Many people from both Hartford and Norwich were involved in some way with the Hartford Norwich Holiday Basket Helpers. We thought you might like to know how it all worked out.
217 sponsors bought 5 or so gifts each for 437 children from 193 families. Over 50 volunteers worked for 5 nights to cross check the children's wish lists against the gifts that came in, and then bundled them for pick up by grateful parents on Saturday morning. Many, many donations came in, but as they are still being received, we'll report that number later. Each family also received a food gift card with their children's gifts.
Meanwhile, another 52 volunteers organized and delivered food baskets to 171 seniors in both Hartford and Norwich. Those baskets were heaped with over 1000 pounds of canned fruit, 750 pounds of potatoes, apples, carrots and fresh fruit, cookies, ornaments and cards.
How's that for a true community action event? Many thanks to all of you, so generous in your responses from the list serves, posters, and word of mouth requests, and to the several organizations that awarded HNHB substantial grants. The work of HNHB amounted to a stimulus program for the Upper Valley, with tens of thousands of dollars being spent! Thank you, thank you.
A joyful holiday to all of you from a grateful committee,
Dave Delucia, Ann Marie Smith, Megan Brendel, Phyllis Bettis, Sue Pitiger, Terry Chesbro, and Pat Stark
